Social Media Policies

Social media policies prevent from potential problems related to inappropriate use of social media. However, they need to be written clearly so they are understandable for all employees. But companies need to make sure that online policies are still aligned with offline policies (Broughton et al., 2009).
ACAS says that policies about social media help both employers and employees (ACAS, 2016) because they set boundaries between what is tolerable and what is not (Broughton et al., 2009). Moreover, policies create legal grounds for employees. Therefore, employees welcome social media policies. They provide them guidelines which are useful when facing this new territory.
Social media policies should cover various potential problems, such as cyberbullying, data security or confidentiality and more. These policies should never discourage employees from using social media.
